What do I need to get started?
Only the belief that you can have a joyful career and that you are more than capable of completing this transition successfully. Know with all your heart that all teachers have at least a kernel of creativity in their heart and that this is what you will rely on to transform your current lessons into Power Projects. Then you need a copy of your state standards for the course that you are teaching. Your administrator can get this for you or you can go online and find it on the department of education website for your state.
Is this hard to do?
No, but the first course (and maybe you only teach one course!) that you change will take a lot of time to complete. Summers are best to do the legwork. You can also work on it over Christmas break. The payoff is great; do the work when you don't have students and then stand back and watch it all take care of itself when class is in session. Teachers tend to be more relaxed and creative and focused when we're not busy running the big show.
Do parents like this type of class?
Yes, they like that their child's learning needs are clearly accommodated. They appreciate that their child gets multiple chances to earn a 100% for a project. They like that the instruction is one-on-one, exactly like a tutoring situation. They also like that the student expectations are very simple (keep all required supplies in class and get one project scored each week). Best of all, they understand that this learning environment prepares their child for independance and success after high school.
How does the school administration feel about your model?
They love it! 100% of students are engaged in rigorous work aligned with the state standards, 100% of the class period . It's so easy to understand, that they can handle any parent inquiries or student concerns without consulting the teacher.
Does this work with any content area?
Yes. It's a simple idea. Take the very best lessons you are using now, write an instruction sheet for students which walks them, step-by-step, through the lesson and provide a rubric for the requirements needed to earn a 100%.
