Extra perks for German IB Students:
Pre-IB and Non-IB students can learn together in the same classroom. That means your friends who are not in IB can still end up in the same German class as you. That's reassuring.
Keep the same teacher for 4 years. In most classes, when you get to know a teacher and figure out how to work best with him or her the year is almost over, and then you have to get a new teacher to start the entire process over with again. Not so in German class! Dr. Bogard keeps her IB students for 4 years. Once you get to know each other and the projects, everything remains smooth sailing during your entire IB experience. Plus she really gets to know you and your talents, and can support your needs.
ABOUT THE GERMAN IB PROGRAM & CURRICULUM:
Dr. Bogard's GOAL for the German IB students is to PASS the IB Language B Exam in German at either the Standard Level (SL) or the Higher Level (HL) at the end of the learner's senior year.
The SL exam is what the majority of students choose to take. However, students with native speakers of German at home, may wish to work a bit harder to pass the HL exam.
Both SL and HL exams consist of the same 3 parts:
Paper 1: a text-handling exam based on 4 German texts and a short essay response
Paper 2: a 250 (SL) or 400 (HL) word essay based on 1 of 6 written prompts
Internal Assessment: a 10 minute oral exam
German IB students will take 4 complete German IB Diploma exams to practice before they take the real one at the end of their senior year. This will help them know exactly what to expect and should reduce their stress.
In class, students complete 7 projects that prepare them for these 3 IB exam parts:
1. For Paper 1: A short culture research project which helps students get familiar with the quarter's assigned theme (the same themes that show up most frequently on the IB exam)
2. For Paper 1: A text-handling project which focuses on analysing a German text (of their choice) that is also from the quarter's theme.
3. For Paper 1 and Paper 2: A flashcard project which reinforces themed vocabulary words.
4. For Paper 2: A grammar text with workbook exercises to review and further develop the Pre-IB grammar lessons.
5. For the Internal Assessment: An individual oral on a topic of the student's choice.
6. For the Internal Assessment: A group oral to practice conversation skills.
7. For Paper 2: A quarter essay to reinforce grammar and vocabulary skills with a detailed message.
Our 8 themes include: Family, Economy, Education, Freetime, Political Change, Racism, Environment and Media.
No homework is assigned by the instructor, instead the students self-select parts of projects to do at home (ex. making flashcards and studying them, color-coding the parts of speech in their compositions, writing their individual oral, completing the text-handling analysis packet, and filling in the culture worksheets).
Each quarter concludes with a German award-winning feature film (with English subtitles) that relates to the quarter's theme. Movies shown may include: Lola Rennt, Das Boot, Goodbye Lenin, Bella Martha, Nirgendwo in Afrika, Das Wunder von Bern, etc.
We have fun with each other in class, but our goal is taken very seriously: everyone will prepare thoroughly, so that everyone will pass their German IB diploma exam.
